New data has suggested that regularly drinking black tea can help inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19. However, the study, published in Food and Environmental Virology, strongly says that this potential mechanism is not a replacement for a COVID-19 vaccine. Scientists behind this research say gargling with tea for ten seconds can offer the most beneficial effects for those who are infected. Read on to know more.
One cup of black tea every morning can work wonders to alleviate the COVID-19 virus, according to a new study. The data, published in the medical journal Food and Environmental Virology shows that tea may be a useful prevention tool due to its ability to inactivate the virus in the mouth.
Even though the virus enters your body through the respiratory tract, your mouth is another entry point where it can reproduce in the oral glands and mucosa before affecting other parts of the gastrointestinal system.
New research has shown that tea helps stop COVID-19 by reducing viral load upon contact, potentially helping reduce the spread of the virus both throughout the body and to other people.
To conduct the study, scientists put black tea in hot water in two different concentrations. Coronavirus was then incubated in both of them. It was then noted that the cup with higher concentration slowed down the viral activity within ten seconds.
According to researchers, the teas, made from the Camellia sinensis plant, include green, black, oolong, and white varieties. Packed with polyphenols – antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, potentially allowing the beverage to improve viral symptoms. Scientists say polyphenols are the main reason behind stopping the virus.
“Our results provide insights into a rapid at-home intervention (tea drinking or gargling) to reduce infectious SARS-CoV-2 load in the oral cavity which might also mitigate infection of the oral mucosa,” the study authors reported in the journal.
However, the study authors have said If you have COVID, drinking or gargling with tea, especially black tea, may offer some benefits. However, it should not be viewed as a prevention or treatment strategy.
The study says while the standard black tea helps cut COVID-19 virus levels by 99.9 per cent, mint, raspberry, green, and eucalyptus teas can do the same by 96 per cent. Experts say even though this study does not establish tea as a standalone remedy for the virus in the nose, it can still help create an extra layer of intervention that you can use daily.
