Earlier every year, the increase in tea production has been recorded in the first six months i.e. from January to June. Among those months, the highest tea harvest has been recorded in the two months of May and June.
But due to the drought and rain in the first six months of this year, as well as the lack of fertilizer, there is a significant decrease in tea production. The Sri Lanka Tea Board points out that this amount is a decrease of 7.1 million kg of tea in the last six months.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera discussed with the officials of the Sri Lanka Tea Board yesterday (13) about the future progress and ongoing programs of the Tea Board.
Since the tea growers have started applying fertilizers in this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industry has taken steps to provide a subsidy of Rs.1200 million for tea industry, and the yield of tea plantations can increase this time after a few years in a situation where there is good sunshine as well as rain and applying the fertilizer.
However, he also emphasized that it will be possible to get an income of 1.3 billion USD from the export of tea this year. Also, during the last six months of this year, an income of 110 million USD was earned through the export of tea, said Mr. Niraj De Mal, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, who expressed his views, advised to start new technical programs so that maximum yield can be obtained from the currently cultivated land instead of using more land for tea cultivation.
