Steps have been taken to temporarily suspend the importation of organic fertilizer according to the Director General of Agriculture Department.
Its Director-General, W.M.W. Weerakoon speaking to the Hiru news team stated that the decision was taken due to several other factors including the risk of microorganisms entering the country through imports.
Cabinet decisions communicated on the 1st of this month stated that Cabinet approval has been granted to import organic fertilizer and natural mineral requirements for paddy cultivation in the Maha season 2021 and 2021 for 500,000 hectares through government fertilizer companies.
It was also stated that it has been decided to import and distribute organic fertilizer required for about 600,000 hectares of other crops to the farmers as per the recommendations of the relevant research institutes.
However, it has been decided to suspend the import of organic fertilizer.
Meanwhile, State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that the rice crisis will be aggravated due to the decision taken to stop the import of chemical fertilizers.
He was speaking to the media in Hettipola, Kurunegala yesterday.
