COLOMBO, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's tea production in August rose 3 percent from a year ago on favourable weather, the state-run tea board said on Monday.
Tea output in August was 25.15 million kg, compared to 24.42 million kg in the same month last year, The output in the first eight months jumped 21.2 percent to 221.28 million kg against 182.52 million in the same period last year.
"This is due to favourable weather conditions," H.D. Hemarathne, director general of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, told Reuters.
Better fertiliser application and good agricultural practices also have helped boost the production, he said.
The Tea Board hopes Sri Lanka's No. 1 agricultural export crop will hit record high revenue of over $1.3 billion and an all time output peak this year, surpassing 318. 7 million kg hit in 2008.
Output fell 9 percent to 289.8 million kg last year due to adverse weather conditions and a lack of fertiliser, along with a labour strike.
Sri Lanka's annual earnings from tea exports fell 6.8 percent to $1.2 billion in 2009. The export revenue during Jan-June has risen 23.9 percent to $625.7 million compared to a year ago, the central bank's latest data showed.
Tea is one of the $42 billion economy's main foreign currency earners, along with remittances, textile and garment exports and tourism.
