ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s tea and tourism industries have come together to form a dedicated destination management organization (DMO) to support the Pekoe Trail, a 300 kilometre hike through the island’s tea sector.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance, a collective set up by industry leaders in 2019 said it was partnering with seven regional tea plantation companies to set up The Pekoe Trail Company (Guarantee) Limited as a destination management company.
The Pekoe Trail Company will manage, maintain and promote The Pekoe Trail with joint initiatives, though a commercial, private-sector lens, the statement said.
The promoters say it is the first independent, private sector led entity to manage a tourism experience in Sri Lanka.
The DMO will bring together regional plantation companies, donor organizations, government and state enterprises to the preservation and promotion of The Pekoe Trail.
“The Pekoe Trail promises an immersive and enriching experience for those seeking to connect with the authentic essence of Sri Lanka,” according to the promoters.
A DMO will typically manage and promote a destination paying attention to ‘sustainable’ aspects.
The Pekoe Trail DMO has the potential to inspire touristic destinations in Sri Lanka to adopt similar models for destination management, its founders say.
“By providing a platform for emulation, adoption, and adaptation, the DMO paves the way for scalable solutions to address visitor management requirements of other high-tourism locations,” the statement said.
The Pekoe Trail is backed by the European Union (EU) with additional support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). (Colombo/May02/2024)
